Sphere Las Vegas debuts largest LED screen in the world

The Exosphere at Sphere in Las Vegas – the largest LED screen on earth – was completely illuminated for the first time as part of a special show celebrating the Fourth of July.

If you thought Spaceship Earth at Epcot was massive, think again. Sphere’s fully-programmable exterior consisting of approximately 1.2 million LED pucks (each containing 48 individual LED diodes capable of displaying 256 million different colors) measures 580,000 square feet, more than five times the size of the Walt Disney World icon.

For its spectacular Independence Day debut, Exosphere displayed a welcome “Hello World” message followed by fireworks and stars-and-stripes animation before transitioning through visuals demonstrating the unparalleled LED canvas, including underwater scenes and highly-detailed lunar surfaces.

“The Exosphere is more than a screen or a billboard – it is living architecture, and unlike anything that exists anywhere in the world,” said SVP Brand Strategy and Creative Development Guy Barnett. “Last night’s show provided a glimpse of the Exosphere’s captivating power, and the possibilities for artists, partners, and brands to create compelling and impactful stories to connect with audiences in new ways.”

Beginning this month, the Exosphere will display activations to coordinate with major events in Las Vegas, including Sphere’s opening in September with U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere and the first Sphere Experiencein October, “Postcard from Earth.” During the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix in November, the Exosphere will feature race-related content, activations, and advertising.

“There’s nothing comparable to the impact from displaying innovative brand and immersive content on the world’s largest video screen,” said David Hopkinson, president, and CEO of MSG Sports, who oversees global marketing and brand partnerships across Sphere Entertainment and the MSG family of companies. “The extraordinary experiences we can create are only limited by imagination, and we’re thrilled to finally share with the world the spectacular potential of the Exosphere.”

The large-scale immersive entertainment space will feature 16K x 16K resolution – the highest resolution LED screen on earth – plus the world’s largest beamforming audio system, seats that allow guests to
”feel” the experience, and environmental effects like changing temperatures and breezes.
